When you get started with Invisalign, you will be given a set of custom-made aligners that are designed to gradually move your teeth into their proper positions. Throughout your treatment period, you will visit your dentist periodically so they can monitor your progress. At one of these appointments, you might learn that you need Invisalign refinements. What exactly are Invisalign refinements, and what can you expect from the refinement process? This blog post explains what you should know.
What Are Invisalign Refinements?
Invisalign refinements are extra aligner trays that may become necessary during your treatment.
Ideally, your original treatment plan would go exactly as predicted. However, teeth do not always move the way that was planned. When that happens, additional aligners may be necessary to get things back on track.
Will You Need Invisalign Refinements?
Refinements are not necessary in all Invisalign cases, but they are quite common.
There are a few reasons why refinements may be necessary. In some cases, circumstances beyond your control may lead to the need for refinements. For example, one or more of your teeth may move more slowly than expected, or it may move differently than was originally anticipated.
In other instances, unfortunate circumstances during treatment can cause refinements to be necessary. If you neglect to wear your aligners for the recommended 20 – 22 hours each day, you are more likely to require refinements. Similarly, if an accident or health problem makes it impossible for you to wear Invisalign for a while, you are likely to need refinements.
What to Expect with Invisalign Refinements?
Here are a few important points to keep in mind about Invisalign refinements:
- The process of getting refinements is easy. Your dentist will scan your teeth and order new aligners from Invisalign. It might take a few weeks for the refinements to arrive at your dentist’s office.
- They could extend your total treatment timeline. Refinements might add a few months to your Invisalign treatment. That can be disappointing, but remember, the important thing is that you get good results!
- Refinements might affect the cost of your treatment. You can expect your dental team to be upfront with you about how refinements might impact your financial obligation.
Refinements could play an important role in your Invisalign treatment. Ask your dentist if you have questions about this aspect of your orthodontic treatment journey.
