Treating Sleep Apnea With Three Different Options

November 28, 2012

Sleep apnea is a common issue with men and women, ranging in age from children to adults. If not treated properly with the right amount of examination and care, the effects can be fatal. Don’t let the early warning signs pass you or your loved ones by.

With the modern technology found at the Center for Advanced Dentistry, Dr. Hornstein can help you treat it, no matter what your age is.

Basically, there are three main methods of treatment:

  • Surgery
  • Using a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine
  • Wearing a custom fit oral appliance at night.

Surgery might sound a bit extreme at first, but if you have a blocked airway, surgery is highly recommended. With an obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), blockages somewhere in the airway occur repeatedly in a short amount of time. Your breathing can stop for as little as a few seconds to a few minutes. The hope with the surgery option is to open the airway. That way, you can reduce obstructions to a safe level. Your uvula, palate and jaw are looked at.

With a CPAP machine, oxygen is continuously pumped into your nose or a facial mask.

If you find a CPAP to be a ball and chain, there is another option. Oral appliance therapy involves an orthotic made with you in mind and you wear it at night. This orthotic can do all kinds of things, like preventing the soft palate from blocking your airways and repositioning your tongue. Even better, an oral appliance lessens snoring.

Dr. Hornstein and the Center for Advanced Dentistry are here to help. We’re happy to talk with you about what’s best for treating your sleep apnea. Give us a call today. We serve patients from Cleveland, Solon, Shaker Heights, Pepper Pike, and surrounding areas.

What is Holistic Dentistry?

November 21, 2012

You might have heard a lot about holistic dentistry in the past few years. You might have a lot of questions about it. What are the benefits? Why do some dentists boast about being Mercury-free for all these years? Is this kind of dentistry right for me, beyond the dental care I’ve had for years?

Holistic dentistry has been called a few different things over the years: alternative dentistry, biologic dentistry, biocompatible dentistry, and unconventional dentistry. But what exactly is involved with holistic dentistry? Essentially, it combines modern dental technology with healing methods from around the world. Your whole body is examined; not just your oral health. Much more thorough than general dentistry, there are so many aspects of it. At the Center for Advanced Dentistry, Dr. Hornstein, Dr. Gray and their qualified staff offer the best in holistic dentistry.

Here are the services that we offer:

Since part of holistic dentistry involves massage therapy, we offer different types of it, including:

  • Paraffin Therapy
  • Reflexology Massage
  • Chair Massage
  • Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Massage
  • Full Body Massage

At the Center for Advanced Dentistry, since holistic dentistry promotes stress reduction and nutrition, we offer the latest and most helpful nutrition information available. Plus, we offer a thorough list of holistic practitioners in the area. The focus is on your overall wellness, going on an organic and natural route. Hoping to prevent and reverse degenerative dental disease, nutrition, proper nutrition is a major part of holistic dentistry.

We’re happy to answer any or all questions you might have about holistic dentistry. Give us a call today to schedule an appointment. We serve patients from Cleveland, Solon, Shaker Heights, Pepper Pike, and surrounding areas.

Dental Implants As a Gift

November 14, 2012

Want to give the gift of dental implants for the new year? It’s not that far fetched.

You’ve heard a lot about dental implants on this blog for good reason. As a reminder here are some of the reasons why.

  • Implants are a safe and organic alternative to other plans
  • They can help prevent you from losing more teeth in the future.
  • You have the root of your tooth and your smile restored at the same time.

Interested? There are steps to what happens next.

Dr. Hornstein will decide if you or your loved one is a candidate for implants. If Dr. Hornstein believes you are, the proverbial ball can begin rolling as soon as possible. Doesn’t matter if one tooth or a whole row needs replacing, dental implants do the heavy work. By forming an artificial root for your tooth or teeth, these aren’t like dentures. They don’t slip like dentures, so don’t worry about that common problem. You must have a stable jawbone, and if you or your loved one qualifies, get ready for a life-changing experience in only a few visits.

Sometimes, bone grafting may be needed beforehand. Most people qualify for dental implants, so rest assured. Schedule a consultation. In addition to regular brushing and flossing twice a day, regular check-up with Dr. Hornstein will make sure things are going accordingly.

Imagine improved speech along with the confidence found in a bright and healthy smile. Speaking with ease and clarity is always a plus, no matter what your age is. No need for a soft-spoken approach or sentences with only a few words. Dental implants can get you or a loved one on that road.

Give us a call today. The new year will be here sooner than you think. We serve patients from Cleveland, Solon, Shaker Heights, Pepper Pike, and surrounding areas.

A Natural-Looking Smile with Dental Implants from Dr. Hornstein

September 16, 2011

It can be hard to feel confident when your smile’s missing one or more teeth. But missing teeth can affect more than your confidence—they can also have a serious impact on your oral health.

Patients with missing teeth will eventually experience bone loss in their jawbone, because where there used to be a root to anchor your tooth and stimulate the growth of new bone tissue, now there’s nothing at all. That means part of your jaw doesn’t have a purpose anymore. What’s more, as your jawbone grows increasingly weaker, it’s likely that you could lose more teeth over time.

Traditional dentures can help restore your smile’s appearance, but they can’t do much to restore the root you’ve lost. That’s why, at Dr. Hornstein’s Beachwood office, we offer dental implants.

How Dental Implants Work

Unlike traditional dentures and other restorative options, dental implants restore your missing tooth and your missing root. That means having a dental implant placed is almost like getting your old tooth back. And, as an added benefit, dental implants look completely natural. No one but you and Dr. Hornstein will ever need to know you have implants.

If you’d like to find out if you’re a candidate for dental implants, call our Beachwood office today to schedule a consultation appointment. In just a single visit, Dr. Hornstein can determine if dental implants are right for you and begin a treatment plan that will restore your smile.

Give Your Smile an Extra Level of Protection with Dental Sealants

August 26, 2011

When food particles and bacteria find their way into the pits and grooves in your teeth, tooth decay is the result. That’s why brushing and flossing are so important. By maintaining a regular brushing and flossing routine, you’re giving your smile the protection it needs to stay strong and healthy.

But even the best brushers need a little help sometimes. That’s why, at Dr. Hornstein’s Beachwood office, we offer dental sealants. Dental sealants let us give your smile that extra little bit of protection it needs in areas that may be harder to protect.

What are Dental Sealants and How Do They Work?

Dental sealants are applied directly to your teeth after they’ve been cleaned and dried. Then, they’re hardened with a curing light, turning them from a liquid into a thin plastic film. This thin film acts like a barrier for food particles, keeping them away from vulnerable parts of your smile and helping you maintain your optimal oral health.

What’s more, dental sealants can be applied in very little time—anywhere from 10 to 45 minutes, depending on how many teeth Dr. Hornstein will be sealing.

If you’d like to know more about dental sealants, contact our Beachwood dental office to schedule an appointment with Dr. Hornstein. We serve patients from Cleveland, Solon, Shaker Heights, Pepper Pike, and surrounding areas.

August 12, 2011

There could be any number of reasons for why you’ve lost confidence in your smile. You could have a tooth that’s been chipped for as long as you can remember. Or maybe one that cracked suddenly during a meal. It’s even possible t you have old metal fillings that are starting to deteriorate.

But all this can change. With porcelain crowns from Dr. Hornstein’s Beachwood office, you can restore confidence in your smile by restoring function and structure to a tooth that needs help.

By restoring your smile with porcelain crowns, you’re ensuring that your smile stays strong and healthy for years to come. Crowns can even help you preserve your jaw’s correct natural alignment, which is as important for the health of surrounding teeth as it is for the health of your entire jaw.

Kiss Chronic Bad Breath Goodbye

July 15, 2011

Do you try to masque chronic bad breath with gum or mints?  Those may help, but they don’t really treat the problem. Odds are, your recurring bad breath has something to do with your brushing habits, and it may even be a symptom of a serious problem.

Bad Breath – It’s Causes and What It Might Mean

One reason why some suffer from bad breath, also known as halitosis, is because of poor brushing habits. When you forget to brush (or floss), food particles can become trapped in your teeth, where they decay and mix together with bacteria to form a sulfur compound.

But your bad breath may not just be caused by old bits of food. In some cases, halitosis may a symptom of gum disease. Which mean, if you suffer from chronic bad breath and mints, gums, and brushing aren’t helping, you may want to schedule an appointment with Dr. Hornstein. He’ll put your smile through a comprehensive exam to look for any other symptoms that might indicate the presence of the disease.

If we find any, Dr. Hornstein can recommend a treatment process that will help you. Gum disease can often be treated by spending more time at the sink and with more regular dental visit. We may also recommend a professional kit like CloSYSII or a tongue scraper to help you.
