We may have our differences, but there is one thing we all have in common: everyone—absolutely everyone regardless of age, gender, race or religion—needs to sleep. Yes, some people can get by on less sleep, but we all know the value of a good night of rest. Unfortunately, there are many for whom a restful night is merely a dream. A medical condition called sleep apnea can keep them from getting the sleep they need. If you suspect that you or your bed partner needs sleep apnea treatment in Beachwood, contact Dr. Hornstein at The Advanced Center for Dentistry. He works closely with area physicians to correctly diagnose and treat sleep apnea so your dreams about sleep can be a reality.
What is Sleep Apnea?
This is a disorder that causes breathing to periodically pause while you sleep. There are two types of sleep apnea: central sleep apnea is brain based and obstructive sleep apnea, which happen when your airway becomes blocked by your tongue and other tissue in your throat. The more common of the two is obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA.
The Symptoms
The symptom that is most often connected to this condition is loud snoring. This annoying sound happens as a sufferer tries to breathe and air vibrates the tissue that is blocking your airway.
Other frequent signs and symptoms include:
- Awakening during the night gasping for air
- Persistent morning headaches
- Frequently needing to urinate during the night
- A sore throat or dry mouth in the morning
- Daytime drowsiness
- Irritability and difficulty concentrating during the day
The Dangers of Sleep Apnea
As if the symptoms weren’t bad enough, there can also be serious health consequence. And while researchers are not yet prepared to say that there is a cause and effect relationship between this medical concern and certain diseases, there is certainly a link to:
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- Heart disease
- Stroke
- Diabetes
- Depression
