If the thought of undergoing dental treatment makes you uncomfortable, you are far from alone. Rest assured that your dentist wants you to have a positive experience, and they will do everything they can to make that happen. For example, they might recommend that you be sedated during your next procedure. What exactly is sedation dentistry, and what can you expect from it? This blog post answers some common questions.

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry involves the use of medications that promote feelings of calmness and relaxation. Sedation can also reduce your body’s response to pain.

There are different types of sedation. Two of the most popular are:

  • Nitrous oxide, a gas that you inhale through a nasal mask. It is generally regarded as the lightest form of sedation.
  • Oral conscious sedation, which requires you to swallow a pill shortly before your treatment begins. It is more powerful than nitrous oxide and can last for several hours.

Who Should Get Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation can be very helpful for people who struggle with dental anxiety and fear. However, it can be useful for other individuals as well, including those who:

  • Need to undergo extensive or complex treatment.
  • Have a highly sensitive gag reflex.
  • Have a physical condition that makes it difficult for them to stay still.
  • Are not easily numbed by local anesthesia.

Does Sedation Dentistry Have Side Effects or Risks?

Generally speaking, sedation dentistry is very safe. Dentists take great precautions to keep risks as low as possible. For example, they will consider your medical history to determine if you have any conditions that would make sedation unduly risky for you, such as pregnancy or certain respiratory conditions.

Common side effects from sedation are usually mild. For example, some people experience grogginess or a headache. With oral conscious sedation, you may be unable to recall anything that happened during your appointment.

What Does Dental Sedation Feel Like?

Different types of sedation produce different sensations. Nitrous oxide might produce a floating, giddy sensation in addition to feelings of relaxation and well-being. Some people get a cases of the giggles, so nitrous oxide is sometimes called “laughing gas.”

Oral conscious sedation may make you feel tired and heavy. You may drift off to sleep, but you should not become totally unconscious.

How Much Does Sedation Dentistry Cost?

The cost of sedation depends on the method used and other factors. You can ask your dental team for a price estimate. Although it can add to the total cost of your procedure, it may actually save you money in the long run by allowing you to undergo necessary care that you would otherwise be reluctant to commit to. By addressing dental problems sooner rather than later, you can prevent them from worsening and require less dental work overall.
