Oral Health & Pregnancy Facts from Your Beachwood Dentist

July 15, 2015

ThinkstockPhotos-490263543It’s no secret that your body changes when you’re pregnant. Hormones rising and falling, morning sickness, aches and pains, and more can make you feel like your body is out of control. Many patients aren’t aware of how hormonal variation during pregnancy can effect oral health. At the Center for Advanced Dentistry (CFAD), our skilled team will explain the ins and outs of the changes in your oral health while pregnant. If you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant, call to schedule an appointment at our Beachwood, OH office to review oral health and discuss recommended changes to your hygiene routine.

Oral Health Changes While Pregnant

The change in hormone levels puts women at high risk for gum disease, specifically a form of gingivitis referred to as “pregnancy gingivitis.” Thorough at home hygiene and regular six month dental cleaning may not be enough to prevent this form of gingivitis. If you notice inflamed, bleeding or swollen gums, gum sensitivity when eating or drinking, or excessive bleeding when flossing or brushing your teeth, call CFAD immediately. Depending on the severity, we may recommend more frequent cleanings through the course of your pregnancy. Gum disease during pregnancy increases the risk of pre-term birth and underweight babies as well as potentially compromising the baby’s and your immune system if infection enters the blood stream.

Another oral health change noticed while pregnant is the “pregnancy tumor.” The name is quite misleading. A pregnancy tumor is not cancerous. The changes in your body make the mouth’s soft tissue more sensitive to irritation from plaque buildup or foreign debris. These red lumps usually appear on the gums between teeth. If they are extremely painful or impede eating, we may recommend removal, but the tumors typically clear up on their own after you give birth.

Dental Care for Baby from the Dentist Shaker Heights Trusts Most

Did you know your baby’s teeth begin to develop between the 3rd and 6th month of your pregnancy? A healthy diet is essential to a healthy pregnancy, but did you know that eating well can help your baby develop stronger, healthier primary teeth? Your baby needs a lot of vitamins and minerals throughout the pregnancy, but their developing teeth especially need large amounts of Vitamins A, C and D, calcium, protein and phosphorous. Taking a prenatal vitamin as prescribed or recommended by your physician can help you absorb a large percentage of these necessary nutrients, but eating high fiber and protein, and calcium rich foods will provide your baby with more of the necessary nutrients for growth, especially for developing healthy teeth.

Most necessary dental health care is perfectly safe for pregnant and lactating mothers. However, elective procedures should be postponed until after your pregnancy. In the case of dental emergency, more complex restorative procedures may be necessary, but should always be performed in conjunction with your physician.

Pristine Dental Implants in Beachwood, OH

April 1, 2015

Every year, millions of Americans suffer tooth loss from tooth decay, gingivitis, or facial injury. Originally, the restoration methods were dentures and bridges. While dentures and bridges are still great methods to replace missing teeth, there is another option that has become a preferable method for those who want to replace a tooth or a set of teeth: dental implants. Implants are durable, long lasting, and look natural with your other teeth. The Center for Advanced Dentistry  offers a safe, comprehensive procedure to give you pristine, wonderful dental implants.

Why Should I Choose Dental Implants?

Dental implants are a fantastic way to replace your missing teeth. These are not temporary replacements and they do not require adhesives. Implants are permanent replacements that will last for years, with proper care. Our trained, talented doctors will examine your mouth, look at the problem area, and form a plan to craft the perfect dental implant for you. Instead of letting your self-esteem take a blow or suffer through other oral issues due to the missing tooth, our team can prepare a replacement that will make you proud to flash your smile everywhere you go.

Easy Procedure to Fix Your Smile

464527529During your first appointment, our caring staff will attentively examine your mouth and walk you through the next steps in gaining a replacement. Afterward, we will sedate you with anesthesia so that we can surgically insert a biocompatible titanium post into your jawbone. You will then go through a healing period as the bone grows over and bonds with the post. After the post heals, you will return to our office. We will double-check everything to make sure the post is secure and everything has healed properly. If all is well and you do not require extra healing time, we will secure and bond the replacement tooth on the post. Then, you can walk out of our building with a complete, full smile across your face.

Complete Your Smile Today

Contact The Center for Advanced Dentistry today to restore your smile. We love to help patients achieve the smile they want, and our doctors are always ready to provide natural tooth replacements for those who need it. Our building is open to Beachwood, OH, Shaker Heights, Pepper Pike, Warrensville Heights, Cleveland, and the neighboring communities.

If we see any issues, such as grinding or periodontal disease, we will customize your treatment to fit your personal needs. Night guards can be provided and periodontal therapy can be applied to prevent further damages. Our ultimate goal is to issue optimal oral health, and for you to continue to place your oral hygiene care in our talented hands.

When Should I Make an Appointment?

If you have not been to a dentist in a long time, we recommend you schedule an appointment as soon as possible. Treating Sleep Apnea With Three Different Options

November 28, 2012

Sleep apnea is a common issue with men and women, ranging in age from children to adults. If not treated properly with the right amount of examination and care, the effects can be fatal. Don’t let the early warning signs pass you or your loved ones by.

With the modern technology found at the Center for Advanced Dentistry, Dr. Hornstein can help you treat it, no matter what your age is.

Basically, there are three main methods of treatment:

  • Surgery
  • Using a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine
  • Wearing a custom fit oral appliance at night.

Surgery might sound a bit extreme at first, but if you have a blocked airway, surgery is highly recommended. With an obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), blockages somewhere in the airway occur repeatedly in a short amount of time. Your breathing can stop for as little as a few seconds to a few minutes. The hope with the surgery option is to open the airway. That way, you can reduce obstructions to a safe level. Your uvula, palate and jaw are looked at.

With a CPAP machine, oxygen is continuously pumped into your nose or a facial mask.

If you find a CPAP to be a ball and chain, there is another option. Oral appliance therapy involves an orthotic made with you in mind and you wear it at night. This orthotic can do all kinds of things, like preventing the soft palate from blocking your airways and repositioning your tongue. Even better, an oral appliance lessens snoring.

Dr. Hornstein and the Center for Advanced Dentistry are here to help. We’re happy to talk with you about what’s best for treating your sleep apnea. Give us a call today. We serve patients from Cleveland, Solon, Shaker Heights, Pepper Pike, and surrounding areas.
