Every dental emergency is unique, but that does not mean they do not have some things in common! In fact, some problems occur much more frequently than others. What exactly are some of the most common dental emergencies, and how might your dentist treat them? This blog post explains.

Toothache

Technically speaking, a toothache is not a dental emergency; it is actually a symptom of one. This type of pain could point to numerous problems, so one of the first things your dentist will do is perform an examination to find out what is happening. To fix the issue, you might need something as simple as sensitivity-reducing toothpaste or as extensive as a tooth extraction.

Lost Restoration

Fillings, crowns, and other types of restorations are very durable, but they do not last forever. Eventually, they reach the end of their lifespan. You might even lose one unexpectedly! If that ever happens to you, your dentist might be able to reattach your restoration, or you may need a completely new one. In some cases, a tooth with a failed restoration may need additional care to address issues like new decay or an infection.

Broken Tooth

A chipped, cracked, or broken tooth is sometimes reparable via dental bonding, which can reshape the tooth and restore its function. If the damage is severe, though, you might need more complex treatment. In some cases, it is even necessary to completely remove a broken tooth and replace it later on with an implant or bridge.

Bleeding and Trauma

A fall, car accident, or mishap during sports can cause significant pain and damage to your soft oral tissues. Your dentist may clean your wounds and do what they can to repair your teeth. For example, if one of your teeth got knocked out, your dentist might be able to splint it back into place.

(Please note: If your bleeding is severe, you believe you have a broken jaw, or you have any life-threatening symptoms, head to the local emergency department. You can visit your dentist later for follow-up care.)

Post-Op Complications

The majority of dental procedures are successful, so you can expect to heal without complications. Rarely, though, a patient suffers from a post-op infection or another issue. Your dentist can address such problems, perhaps with antibiotics or other treatments, and get your body’s recovery process back on track.

What to Expect with Emergency Treatment

Emergency dental treatment might seem a bit intimidating, but remember that its goal is to get you out of pain and preserve your oral health. You can expect your dentist to be as gentle and compassionate as possible as they provide treatment. Sedation and/or local anesthesia can make treatments comfortable.

Dental emergencies come in all sorts of different forms! Whatever your situation, you can trust a qualified dentist to help you get back to feeling like yourself.
